Anthropologist and Anglican priest, Elkin was Head of the Department of Anthropology at Sydney University from 1934-1956, and held a number of professional and academic memberships. His main area of study was the anthropology of Australian Aboriginal people, with a focus also on the people of Papua New Guinea. He was also the editor of Oceania (1933-1979).
